Job Description:

The purpose of this position is to work on HR Magazine and other SHRM-published content as assigned.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

- Write cover stories, features and Agendas for HR Magazine and news and feature stories for SHRM Online.
- Generate story ideas and conduct background research for editorial content and publications for self and other staff and freelance writers.
- Cultivate sources among HR professionals, SHRM members and business, government and associations.
- Write and/or edit certain magazine departments as assigned.
- Travel 4-5 times a year for conferences and story trips.
- Help cover SHRM conferences and produce Conference Dailies and as needed.
- Perform rewrites and substantive and copy edits of magazine and newspaper articles and check layouts as needed.
- Provide occasional coverage of breaking news for SHRM Online and/or help edit Online stories.
- Contribute to editorial special projects and reports.

QUALIFICATIONS :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A college degree in Journalism, English or related field.

- Proven ability to write and edit complex magazine and news articles accurately, comprehensively and quickly with minimal need for revision. At least 10 years of professional writing and editing experience required.
- Ability and willingness to consistently meet deadlines, even if this requires occasional overtime work, and to travel to conferences and for other work-related reasons.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Good understanding of business and government concepts and principles. Knowledge of HR issues is extremely helpful.
